We believe students who enjoy school achieve the greatest success. We work hard to ensure our students are given every opportunity to engage in new and fulfilling experiences. At Norotn College, our enrichment programme offers so many opportunities to challenge and inspire our students during and beyond the school day.
Please see below to read more about the range of inspirational and exciting opportunities on offer this academic year.
The Norton College House System
At Norton College, we take pride in our House System, which builds community, teamwork, and friendly competition across the school. Every student belongs to one of our four Houses, each named after a historic local abbey:
- Fountains
- Jervaulx
- Kirkham
- Strensall
Throughout the year, students can earn House Points in a variety of ways — by demonstrating our Norton College Values, achieving excellence in lessons, or taking part in House Competitions. House Competitions cover a range of sporting and non-sporting events, encouraging every student to get involved. The winning House of each competition earns 50 House Points, contributing to their overall total.
Regular House Assemblies, led by our House Leaders, celebrate our shared achievements and explore the rich history behind each House. These assemblies also inspire students to take pride in their House identity and to live out our school values every day.
When students reach Year 9, they can apply to become House Captains or Sports Captains. These leadership roles offer students the chance to develop key organisational and communication skills:
- Sports Captains help to organise and officiate sporting competitions.
- House Captains support and lead non-sporting events, ensuring every member of their House has the opportunity to contribute.
Together, our Houses form the heart of Norton College life — encouraging participation, celebrating success, and building a strong sense of community.
Student Leadership/Council
This academic year the work of our Student Leadership Team will be supported by a new Student Council approach. Each tutor group, which is linked to one of our four houses, will have two representatives who will meet on a half termly basis. The topics for discussion will form part of our tutor time programme and outcomes then shared at a Student Council meeting, with each Tutor group represented. The outcomes from the Student Council will then support the plans/aims for the Students Leadership Team, linking to the four groups - Wellbeing, Community, Diversity and Environment.
